The term ‘Schizophrenia’ was introduced by Eugene Bleuler in 1908 to describe a set of symptoms previously labelled as dementia praecox. Schizophrenia refers to the splitting of different psychological symptoms within a single personality (Davey, G. 2014). â€Å"Schizophrenia is characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and behaviour, and other symptoms that cause social or occupational dysfunction. For a diagnosis, symptoms must have been present for six months and include at least one month of active symptoms† (American Psychiatric Association 2013). Some key changes have been made to the category of Schizophrenia in the DSM5. The symptom threshold has been raised, requiring a patient exhibit at least two specified symptoms (the threshold was one in previous editions). Additionally, the diagnostic criteria no longer identify subtypes, based on the evidence that a patient s symptoms often changed from one subtype to another. Schizophrenia can be divided into three sub-categories, positive, negative and mixed (Andreasen, N. C., Olsen, S. 1982). Positive refers to the presence of active symptoms including delusions and hallucinations; negative symptoms refer to a loss of emotion (affective flattening), speech (alogia) or motivation (avolition), and mixed refers to a situation in which either both sets of symptoms exist, or neither. With tourism come hotels, restaurants, car rental agencies, tour companies, service stations, souvenir shops, sports equipment rentals, and much more. All of this creates many different levels of employment for people in a given community. Tourism industry is taking advantage of the demand and working more on the development side, and as a result some rural places are also getting developed. The most commonly seen advantages benefits from the Tourism include new jobs, income, and tax revenue to the government. The tourism is also bringing the knowledge of that particular place to the world, and upgrading the local cultural facilities, or an enhancement of regional conservation efforts .Generally, tourism is very profitable in the terms of income for the countries, especially to those which are in the developing stage, as this industry does not require lot of literacy or capital. Tourism may directly lead to unsightly sprawl in rural areas by creating a demand for development. Other negative side effects include potentially higher rates of crime and greater demand for local services, such as police and fire protection and sanitation services, which can be expensive to provide. Also, tourism can risk changing the rural â€Å"sense of place† for some communities. Increased crowding and traffic congestion may also result with an influx of tourists into an area. Greater demand for local arts and crafts can also potentially lead to a lowering of the quality of these products. Finally, tourism risks degrading natural resources in rural areas unless3 environmental sustainability efforts are undertaken. Many of these risks, however, can be mitigated if proper planning is employed at the outset of tourism development. Race for Life Cancer Research Blackpool

Introduction Race for life is known to be a series of events that are conducted to raise funds for women only. Organization of this event is done is done by the Cancer Research UK which is a British charity. These events conduct several activities such as walking, jogging and running. These races that are conducted are done in the course of 5 kilometres and focus on the aim of raising funds and sponsorships. The funds raised by this event are distributed amongst 200 categories of cancer disease. The event possesses a status of being gender segregated that has resulted in giving rise to certain complaints (Wynick 2014). It has also resulted in the development of alternate events for men that include events of short run for 5 kilometres for Moore. The Fund for Imperial Cancer Research had identified Jim Cowan who possessed the actual concept for the generation of Race for Life. The respective Fung then started being engaged with Mr. Cowan for organizing and enacting as director of the race that was conducted for the very first event of Race for Life. This event took place in Battersea Park in the year 1994. In this particular event, almost 750 candidates had participated and the fund raised was almost 48,000. In the next year, extension of the race was done to 6 different venues and consisted of 4500 participants. This race contributed in raising 210,000 (Williams 2014). As years passed, there was an improvement in the intensity of events with different venues raising large amount of funds. Due to this success and popularity, it has been identified as one of the biggest events for raising fund. Due to this particular reason and possessing a good cause to raise funds, this particular event now takes place in every year for raising funds for 200 categories of cancer. Survey A survey was conducted on the public and volunteers / participants to gain feedback from them regarding the different events and the overall campaign of Blackpool Cancer for Life event 2014. The participants for the survey were randomly selected to gain a valid and in-depth view on their experience at the event. In total seven questionnaires were distributed in which three were filled by visitors or public, two by volunteers whereas the remaining three by participants. However, the survey process followed a random approach regarding the selection of sample; it was ensured that the people belonging to different age groups were addressed and were interacted with for the filling up of questionnaire (Wade 2014). This was essential to gain a valid and realistic argument or perception regarding the overall customer experience. Results and Analysis Public The analysis of survey results demonstrates that two of the public participants were not local and both of them were female (The Gazette 2014a). However, one of them was not aware prior to the event that the Race for life event is going to held. The same can be perceived as the merit and demerit as well. Merit as it reflects the charm and reputation of concerned event that attracted the non-local people towards it. Demerit as it clearly demonstrates the ineffectiveness of advertising and promotional activities performed prior to the event. Considering their experience, two of them responded that they were somewhat satisfied with the overall event whereas one female responded that she was quite satisfied (Toum 2014). Moreover, regarding the success of cancer for life event in achieving the vision and mission of the cancer for life research, each of them responded in support of its. Thus, the event seems to be appreciable amongst public as neither of them commented any negative remark. The aspects which were highly appreciated by the public, in context of the participants responses, were structure of event, safety and security, and preparation of presenters. However, people felt that the length of event was somewhat long. The participants also responded that they had a quite a bit better or great deal better experience during the event. Moreover, since each of the participants responded that he or she will surely come to another cancer for event at Blackpool, the overall objective of making the people aware and raising funds for cancer patients seem to have achieved (The Gazette 2014b). The public seems to be highly satisfied with the experience they had, however, the associated executives must work on the advertising and promotional practices, as two of the participants responded that they were not aware of the event details and joined it after seeing the entertainment or learning the event detail from a friend. Further, the online practices seem to be highly effe ctive as one of the participant responded that he gained the information of event from online. The managers or executives also need to plan the event at a better time as each of the participants commented that the event was amazing but the windy and cold weather let it down. They also commented that the contribution of volunteers was really appreciable as they appreciated the support and cheer that they did with full enthusiasm (The Gazette 2014a). The spokes person was also appreciated and people perceived him as one of the key success factor for the whole event. Volunteers / Participants The analysis of volunteers responses demonstrates that the volunteers were also quite satisfied with the overall event. According to the volunteers, event structure, police security, first aiders, presence of ambulance, commitment of event, and team work were the key success factors of event. However, the volunteers complained that they were not made aware of their specific roles as volunteers and were not provided with all necessary information for their role prior to the event. This seems to be a big loophole in the event management and may have lead to negative outcomes (Pudelek 2014). Thus, the managers and executives must address this problem and provide effective training and counseling sessions to each of the volunteer prior to the event, while making them aware of the overall location. The volunteers also responded that the location and time could have been better, although it was good for the run and had a smooth course. The volunteers believed that the event lacked in visib ility, first aid timing, marking of volunteers and better communication tools or equipment (Snead 2014). However, they also felt that the atmosphere and the structure were above expectations, well structured and lively. The analysis of participants responses demonstrates that most of the participants were non-local as one of the participants was from Chorley and other was from Blackburn (Pudelek 2014). As one of the participants aged between 20 to 30 years and others mother was also participating, as commented by him, the event was successful in reaching people from almost all age groups. The participants considered the safety and security, presence of ambulance, first aid bikes, adequate information, commitment, team work, structure of event, and location were the key success factors of the event. All the responses from the participants were in support of the event and liked every aspect. They appreciated the crowd as they motivated and cheered them enthusiastically and were extremely satisfied with the overall event. However, they felt that the refreshments or water bottles could have been directly handed over to the participants rather than keeping it on the tables (Mid Devon Gazette 2014). Other participants commented that it would be better to make the timing of event clear, so that the participants can come early or warm up. Thus, the overall analysis of survey results clearly demonstrates that the event was highly successful in satisfying each of the public, volunteer, and participant. Each of them responded they would love to attend the event next time. However, there seems to be some loop holes that must be adequately addressed and resolved by the event managers or executives, so that there is no scope of faults or inadequate conduct. The crowd added to the attraction and charm of event, thus effective advertising and promotional activities must be conducted prior to the nest event (LEP 2014). The event can also be refined through changing the timing as many of the participants of survey complained about it. Observations The observation of the overall event was conducted consistently so as to gain the key success factors and loopholes in the management or operational practices. Considering the health and safety of people, there were no big issues regarding the same as there was first aid bikes and ambulance present closer to the track. The track was also smooth enough and there were tracks for the wheel chair users. The police security also highly contributed to the safety of people. However, the key problem identified was that in the communication in between volunteers and other staff (Hull Daily Mail 2014). The problem occurred due to the inadequate weather and strong winds. The radios must have been exchanged with modern equipment as when a runner fell badly, the first aider took 10 minutes to the spot but the runner had already left and was clearly delayed and slow. The design and structure of overall event was great and the chosen track was perfect. The stalls, stage and the services all were on the top of promenade, thus being at the centre of all crowd, the public was able to easily join in. the crowd added to the success of event as they were enthusiastic and cheered the participants really well. The event continued without any hassle due to adequate crowd control measures. However, the problem was a little far for the volunteers as they had to walk too much and since many of them were not local, they were not well aware of the place (Hines 2014). It was also found that the map provided to volunteers were complicated as the signs were not clearly marked for each standing point. Thus, the management of volunteers was bit disorganized although it did not have any major negative impact on the event as with time the people started getting familiar with place. The event also lacked in the utilization of IT as the only IT tools used were emails to keep everyone updated regarding the timing and location of event. On the contrary, inadequate weather, inappropriate communication gadgets, ineffective awareness, and lack of strong advertising and promotional campaigns appeared to be the loopholes of event. This is perhaps the single most time consuming thought we ever have for most people live their entire lifetimes without finding the answer or even coming close to one. I myself have pondered this question for most of my life, until recently when I used some odd (but logical) logic to come up with a strange conclusion: Nothing exists, and everything exists, for everything is possible all at the same time. Now, by now the reader of this paper is thinking "How is this possible?" or "This guy should be locked up!". Therefore, I plan to explain how I reached this conclusion in this paper. However, I must give fair warning, that some of the logic I used is strange and complex. If you have any doubts about your mental health, or are unsure of your capacities and limitations in any way, please do not read this, or at least do not take it seriously. For those of you who feel you can handle this, read on. Now, let us start at the most logical place to begin, the beginning. What is reality? Well, there are many explanations and theories about this, but I based mine on what I can observe and how I perceive things as a whole. Reality, as we know it seems to be made up of various dimensions. Most people will say reality is three dimensional, but it's really more than that. Time is often considered a fourth dimension, and some people say that there are at least eight known dimensions, possibly as many as thirty. However, it will be easier to start with dimensions from the ground up. Let us start with zero dimensions. A zero dimensional reality is a point. It does not extend in any direction, it is one point, there are no alternatives at all. This is the only type of reality in which a "fact" as we know it really exists. It either is or it isn't. Now, try to imagine a line. Well, there are several types of lines. There are infinite lines, which extend in both directions forever, and lines with one limit, and lines with two limits. Infinity with limits is still infinity. Suppose the line is limited, and is a certain length, not extending forever. This is a one dimensional reality, you can go one way, or the other. Now, how many points (zero dimensional realities) are on the line? Infinite. No matter how short the line is, there's always an infinite number of points. Ok, now on to two dimensions. Two dimensional realities are planes. They're flat level surfaces. How many lines are on a plane? Infinite. So, a two dimensional reality is infinity squared zero dimensional realities. Likewise, three dimensions is an infinite number of planes, and four is an infinite number of three dimensional realities. Therefore, there are somewhere between infinity to the 8th and infinity to the 30th zero dimensional realities in our universe. What is infinity good for? Now that is a good question. What does a universe do with infinite realities? It fills them up. Now, this means to fill up infinite realities, you must have infinite possibilities. So, there are an infinite number of realities in which an event happens, and an infinite number in which it doesn't happen. This is true of every event. The reason we don't perceive it this way, is because our perception is limited. For instance, we do not perceive time as a dimension like height and length and width. This is because we are moving along time in one direction, and cannot sense changes in it. Therefore, events do not just happen for one instant, we only perceive them for one instant as we move along the positive time axis. Therefore everything that ever happened, and everything that will still exists, we just don't see it. So, one can conclude that it is reasonable that we may jump from one reality to another as we move along time. Therefore, nothing is a fact, whether it has happened, is happening, or will happen. It seems that the brain takes a song and translates it into it's own neurosymphony-sending electrical impulses to various parts of your brain. It sounds almost as though we store various different patterns of these impulses in our brains and when the same pattern of sounds matches a pattern of impulses, it triggers a set of images. When I hear Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, I hear raindrops and soft footsteps, while another person might hear rays of light falling on water. Chai Vang Killed 6 Hunters in Wisconsin Hunting Incident A Minneapolis hunter, Chai Soua Vang, was asked to leave a deer stand located on private property in Wisconsin. The situation escalated, and Vang opened fire on the property owner and his hunting guests, killing six and wounding two others. It was November 21, 2004, just one day after deer season opened in rural Sawyer County, where deer hunting is a way of life for hundreds of local sportsmen. Vang, a resident of St. Paul, Minnesota, is a Hmong American from Laos. He became lost while hunting in the area and asked two hunters for directions. He ended up on 400 acres of private property and climbed up on a deer stand he found there.   According to investigators, Terry Willers, co-owner of the land, rode by the site and saw someone in the deer stand. He radioed back to the hunting cabin where he and 14 others were staying, asking who was in the stand and was told that no one was supposed to be in it. Willers said he would ask the hunter to leave the stand. Others from the private party drove their ATVs to the scene. When told to leave the deer stand, Vang complied and began to walk away from the scene. As he walked away, five members of the hunting party, including  Bob Crotteau, who co-owned the property with Willers, confronted Vang. Someone in the private party wrote down Vangs out-of-state hunting license number- correctly posted on Vangs back- in the dust on his ATV. According to survivors of the incident, Vang walked about 40 yards away from the party, took the scope off his Chinese style SKS semi-automatic rifle,  turned and began to fire at the private party. Three of the hunters were shot in the initial burst of fire including Willers who was the only other man in the group who was carrying a gun. Rescuers Shot At Someone in the hunting party radioed back to the cabin and said they were under fire. According to Sawyer County Sheriff Jim Meier, as others from the cabin arrived at the scene, unarmed, to try to rescue the wounded hunters, they too were shot.  Some of the victims had multiple gunshot wounds. Vang fled the scene and became lost again. Two hunters, who were unaware of the shooting incident, walked him out of the woods. As they left the woods, five hours after the shooting, a Department of Natural Resources officer recognized the hunting license number on Vangs back and took him into custody. Vang was held in the Sawyer County Jail. His bail was set at $2.5 million. Killed in the incident were Robert Crotteau, 42; his son Joey, 20; Al Laski, 43; Mark Roidt, 28; and Jessica Willers, 27, the daughter of Terry Willers. Dennis Drew died of his wounds the following night. Terry Willers and Lauren Hesebeck survived their gunshot wounds. Vang Calm After Shootings According to Sheriff Meier, Vang is a U.S. military veteran and a naturalized citizen originally from Laos. Meier also said Vang appeared to be mentally stable. Meier said in a press conference that Vang remained remarkably calm and had not confessed to shooting anybody. He described the suspects calm as frightening. Shooting Was in Self-Defense Vangs version of the events that took place before the shooting began differed from what the members of the surviving hunting party reported. According to Vang, Terry Willers shot at him first, from about 100 feet away. Vang began shooting in self-defense.   Vang also claimed that race was a factor and testified that, during the verbal exchange, some of the hunters made racial slurs, calling Vang a chink and gook. The Trial The  trial took place on September 10, 2005, in Sawyer County Courthouse. The jury was selected from Dane County, Wisconsin, and bused 280 miles to Sawyer County, where they were sequestered. During Vangs testimony, he told the jury that he had feared for his life, and did not begin shooting until the first hunter shot at him. He said that he continued to shoot at the hunters that approached him, sometimes multiple times and sometimes in the back. Vang said that he shot two of the hunters because they were disrespectful. He also said that, while he wished it had not happened, (referring to the shootings), three of the hunters did deserve to die.   The defense showed inconsistencies in the statements given by the two survivors. Lauren Hesebeck admitted that he had previously told his wife that he thought Terry Willers returned fire. Willers said he never shot at Vang. Hesebeck also reluctantly admitted that he had previously stated that Vang was lambasted with profanity and at one point Joey Crotteau blocked Vang from leaving. Vangs attorney attempted to clarify Vangs statement that three of the men deserved to die, saying that it was due to a language barrier and what Vang meant was that the three mens behavior contributed to the situation that led to their deaths. Verdict and Sentencing On Sept. 16, 2005, the jury deliberated for three and a half hours before returning a verdict of guilty of all charges - six charges of first-degree homicide and three charges of attempted homicide.   The following November he was sentenced to six consecutive life terms plus seventy years. Effects of Caffeinated Beverages on Attention Performance Caffeinated Beverages and their Effects on Attention Performance Tasks Cory Jones Methodology As per the requirements of the study, we will try to understand how the consumptions of energy caffeinated drinks affect the Attention Task performance for participants. We will conduct this test on 20 participants (10 male and 10 female) selected randomly from the University of Michigan- Flint campus. Since the participants in the experiment will be college students, we expect them to be within the age range of 18-25 years. From the initial group, participants will be screened to meet the requirements of the test. The selected 20 participants will be asked to take the Conner’s Continuous Performance Task (Conners, 2004). The Continuous performance test is considered one of the best ways to measure attention and vigilance behavior of participants. This test is also used to identify patients with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders. The Continuous Performance Task measures the attention and impulsivity level of the participants. In this particular experiment we will use the computerized version of the Conner’s Continuous Performance Test III. We will use 20 computers and run this test twice to ensure all participants undergo the process. In this version of the test letters of the alphabet are presented in front of the participants for 250ms, the respondent will be instructed to press the keyboard every time they see the letter ‘X’. There will be six blocks for this test; each of these blocks will contain three sub blocks with 20 letters in them. Therefore there will be eighteen sub blocks and the inter stimulus intervals (ISI) for each sub block will vary from 1-4 seconds, so that the participants will not get used to the pattern of the test. The order of the ISI will be mixed and participants will have no inkling about the order in which the letters will appear. The letters presented to the participants will be large and approximately 1 inch in size. The instructor will ask all participa nts to read through the test procedure on the computer screen. A small trial of 20 letters will run twice to help participants get used to the procedure. The test will take approximately 15 minutes per participant; therefore we will collect the baseline data for 60 participants in one hour. In the next phase of the experiment, the participants will be asked to consume 300ml of a caffeinated energy drink that will be given in an unmarked opaque plastic cup. Participants will be given the drinks separately, so that they do not discuss or try to guess the contents of the drink. 30 minutes after consumption of the caffeinated drinks the participants will be again asked to take the Conner’s Continuous Performance test. All subjects will be paid for participating in the experiment. The data collected from the 60 participants will be on two aspects, the test performance score on Inattentiveness and omission, and reaction times. The data collected will be the dependent variable, while the presence or absence of caffeine in the system will be the independent variable or the repeated measures for the related groups. Analysis We will first run normality tests on the data obtained from the study using IBM SPSS v 22 software. Since the sample size is above 50, we will use the Shapiro Wilk test to understand the distribution of the data since we have sample size of less than 50 individuals. If the data has a single peak, we will use parametric tests like paired sample T-test or repeated measures ANOVA to see how the test scores differ between the two conditions. On the other hand, if the data is not normally distributed, we will use Wilcoxon Signed Rank test to see if there is a difference between the attention performances scores before and after caffeine consumption from the baseline. Participant screening The participants will be asked to fill up an information questionnaire; they will be selected based on the results of the questionnaire. Participants who have a history of psychological disorders and who are presently or have in the last few months consumed psychotropic medication or medication that affects CNS will be excluded. Participants, who have a familial history of violence, domestic abuse, divorce or mental disorders, will also be excluded. Participants will be asked if they are presently feeling depressed or stressed due to any circumstances, those who respond in the affirmative will be removed from the experiment. The remaining participants will be asked to stay away from alcohol or caffeine (tea, coffee, chocolates, ice cream etc.) for 48 hours and the experiment will be performed on the second day of screening. This will be done because serum caffeine has a half-life of 5-6 hours (Statland Demas, 1980). All participants will be asked to consume the same recipe of salad and water before appearing for the experiment. On the day of the experiment participants will be allowed to ease into the experiment setup for 5 minutes and after a brief instruction video the study will commence. Data Collection The responses of the participants will be measured in terms of accuracy and response times. Accuracy will be measured in the percentage of ‘X’ detected vs. presented, so the participants will be exposed to different number of ‘X’s at each computer in both trials. The reaction time will be automatically measured by the computer in milliseconds. Data will be generated for each of the 20 partcipants, which will be presented in the form shown in figure 1 and figure 2. The numerical scores as shown in figure 1 will be copied into SPSS software and exploratory and frequentist statistical analyses will be run. Hypothesis For this experiment, we hypothesize that the caffeine trials will improve the test performance of the participants (n=20). The null Hypothesis for this study (Ho) is that there will be no significant difference in test performance between the two trials. Public Schools in America To respond to the statement made by Kozol regarding the nature of public school in America, one must consider the question of what exactly education is for in this country; what is it's purpose. I believe that education is used to produce what Kozol refers to as "good citizens:" "defeated, unprovocative" people that will fill the necessary jobs, pay the necessary taxes, and perform all the other duties put forth by the government such as voting and jury duty. This is why the situation in America's public schools has not changed since the time Kozol wrote The Night Is Dark..., and why things will probably not change without a revolution within the public school system. For my part, I do not think that schools are the places for children to learn morals and ethics. I believe that those are things someone must learn on their own. The method of authority, described by Charles Peirce in his writings, has no place in the formation of anyone's beliefs. Beliefs are totally subjective--that is, there are no "right," or "wrong" beliefs to hold. Therefore, why should the teaching of morals and ethics, which fall into the category of beliefs, be condoned. According to Kozol, "the first act of an ethical child... might well be to start the demolition of a manifestly anti-ethical structure like a public school," and "no institution goes about the conscious task of subsidizing it's own demolition." If public schools are inherently unethical, why would we want them teaching America's children ethics? The answer, of course, is that we would not want them to. If, for arguments sake, the schools were ethical, then teaching ethics to children would not result in "it's own demolition," just a change in how it teaches. Obviously, though, to change the way the public schools teach, the people in power, who currently run the schools, must be removed. They are the ones who will not "subsidize" their own demolition. One of the problems with America's public school system, as well as democracy, is human nature. Once someone is in a position of power, they generally do not want to leave, even if their act of staying is detrimental to the organization they are involved in. The problem of the "lack of morals and ethics" in this country is a large one, however, and is continually growing. It is understandable that some, or maybe a majority of the people, look at the state of the country, and think that reform of the public schools is the answer.

This shows that even after this long period of time, the love for each other remains.While they are caressing, Jamie closes his e yes suggesting he feels safe and comfortable in his mother’s arms, perhaps after a scary situation. In conclusion, in the final scene of the Empire of the Sun, there is recognition of the compassion between the loved ones in the film. This scene reminds me of love and compassion as watched this because it reminds me of the important people in my life, and the special feeling the children received once reuniting with their loved ones. With the help of Mr. Lee Thayer, Stayer has planned to implement a major change in the company’s philosophy. Transition from old philosophy purged Stayer’s responsibilities of decision making by decentralizing the power of decision making. The new philosophy was implemented to bring out changes in various departments of the company viz. management structure, personnel, compensation, manufacturing and also systems and controls. According to Thayer’s new philosophy, performance of the personnel and requirement of guidance to personnel to achieve their objectives were the key elements. Management structure was broken down by hiring experienced personnel for the new superior level management to oversee finance, marketing and operation s functions. Stayer emphasized people development as the core element of the new philosophy. Changes in personnel include development of list of responsibilities by the workers themselves and eliminating the performance review process. These changes in personnel function led changes in compensation with the implementation of â€Å"company performance share† program which increased individual responsibility of workers. However this transition was not in agreement among workers while some are excited about it. In terms of manufacturing changes, lead persons were installed at various departments, eliminating supervisors, to seek information and provide necessary measures to train and improve capacities of workers under designated group. Responsibilities of lead person also include development of budget planning and production requirement planning. Job switching and alternating works were practiced to enrich workers’ capabilities and enhance performance and also job satisfaction. System and controls changes included individuals to develop and be accountable for their own budgets and forecasts and also allow them to analyze performance data. In addition, subordinates were needed to self-evaluate their performance to respective managers. Problem The main issue of the case is the resistance shown by the personnel towards the company’s philosophy transition. According to Stayer, upon implementation of new philosophy, workers at all level were expected to embrace the change. Instead, the company faced issues related to the final goal of the implementation, unsuccessful organization structural changes, clash of responsibilities among the workers, participation of less number of employees in the company decision making process and finally lack of high job satisfaction. However, these issues were expected to expire once the transition is complete. Palmer Sausage offered its consolidated business to Johnsonville but the issue here was whether Stayer could handle an expanded Palmer contract. Stayer examined the situation by understanding that in order to run the contract the company would require to recruit and train a big set of people along with existing people acquiring new skills and retain high quality on both the in-house and Palmer products. In order to achieve this, Johnsonville needs to run the production six or seven days a week for more than a year until its new plant was ready. On the other hand, the company may need to run the business at risk i. e. , if Palmer canceled the contract with 30-day prior notice leaves Johnsonville not only with massive layoffs and but also huge inventory with no market for it. Analysis As the year 1980 folded, Stayer recognizes to restructure his management structure for the growing company. Stayer also realized that there was decline in the quality of the products and employees were also demotivated to work. Later on, in collaboration with Thayer Lee, Stayer has planned to implement new philosophy which is focused on performance and helps people accomplish their objectives through well-defined job descriptions, clear understanding on performance standards, and providing the required resources. Johnsonville’s new values are based on deep moral commitment to the individual. The main aim of the transition is to augment people capacities, rather than the business. Stayer changed view of his autocratic leadership to a role as a leader delegating his subordinates rather than directing them. Furthermore, the new philosophy also motivated each worker to commit to the company’s betterment. Upon full transition, Stayer expects to create an atmosphere of constant learning and development. The transition also supports creativity, encourages responsibility, and empowers employees to develop solutions rather than simply follow orders. Over the period of time, the company’s organizational structure was transformed in support to the new culture of worker empowerment. Autocratic management was decentralized in order to become more democratic. Conventional management position were replaced by lead persons and their teams who controlled their own compensation, hiring, firing, quality control, and near-and long-term company goals. Several ground-breaking solutions were instigated and evaluated and each member of the company was involved for the company’s success. Moreover, a rewarding compensation system was implemented to retain employees and hone their skills and performance. Over-the-time, Stayer had achieved a complete organizational transformation successfully. In terms of Palmer’s offer, Stayer has two recommendations – either he can accept or decline to take over the Palmer’s business. If Stayer had taken over the business, they might have the advantages of the opportunity for growth and additional revenue. On this regard, private label business offers a 25% return on assets. Contrariwise, the deal clashes with Johnsonville’s recent business strategy which prevents the company to push private label business over 15%. The company could compete for capital with the rest of the business once it crosses 15%. In addition to this, the company, while in contract with Palmer, is producing at huge capacity utilization. If the deal is on then the company might need to execute two long shifts for six or seven days a week in order to process the new business. Recommendation At this stand-off point, Johnsonville could be advised to accept Palmer’s deal which help the former to tap the revenue and growth opportunities. Stayer’s Johnsonville should continue to implement its new philosophy in a way that it does not affect the previous work-culture. During the agreement, Stayer should continue to involve employees in the decision making process to accept the private label business and planning to handle the additional workload as well. Apart from this, Stayer is required to motivate his teams to meet for evaluating staffing requirements, production and quality goals. With the involvement of workers and assigning responsibility for the important decisions, Stayer will help secure their buy-in for tackling the challenges ahead.
